Proposed Green Acres Land Purchase Near The Claridges

I want to thank the residents of The Claridges for reaching out to me and asking for my perspective on the proposed purchase of land new The Claridges.

After reviewing the proposal in detail, considering the goals of the Green Acres program, and weighing Verona’s long‑term priorities, including open space preservation, responsible development, affordable housing obligations, and maintaining our identity as a livable, walkable, welcoming small town, I support moving forward with the purchase of this land.

My support is based on several key factors.

First, preserving open space is one of Verona’s most important long‑term commitments. Opportunities to protect land, especially in the more densely developed parts of town are rare. Acquiring this parcel ensures that it remains undeveloped permanently, maintaining a natural buffer around the Claridge buildings and preventing future construction that could significantly impact traffic, density, and quality of life.

Second, the Green Acres program provides a meaningful financial advantage. While the purchase price is substantial, the expected reimbursement of roughly half the cost represents a responsible use of available state resources. Leveraging external funding to secure permanent open space is consistent with how Verona has approached other successful preservation efforts.

Third, this acquisition aligns with Verona’s broader planning goals. Preserving land helps manage development pressure and supports the town’s strategy for meeting affordable housing requirements without over‑building. Protecting this parcel contributes to a balanced approach that respects both state obligations and community character.

Fourth, maintaining Verona as a small, friendly, walkable town requires thoughtful decisions about land use. Open space contributes to environmental health, community well‑being, and long‑term livability. Even though the terrain behind the Claridges is steep and wooded, its value as preserved natural land is significant. Not every parcel needs to be developed or improved to provide meaningful benefit.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the concerns raised about the condo association vote and the process. Those concerns are valid, and they highlight the need for clear communication and transparency. Supporting this purchase does not mean ignoring those issues. It means committing to a process that is open, inclusive, and respectful of resident input as the Township moves forward.

For all these reasons, I support the proposed purchase of the land behind the Claridges.

I believe this decision strengthens Verona’s long‑term environmental, planning, and community goals, and I remain committed to working with Claridge residents to ensure your voices continue to be heard as the conversation progresses.
